DO: MIX TEXTURES

Incorporating rough and smooth textures adds interest to an interior, especially when choosing a simple color palette. "Consider shaggy, knotty, or thick rugs or pillows, woven fabrics in furniture, treasures or raw wood furnishings, and soft, smooth finishes in iron or other metals," says Adams.

DON'T: FORGET TO USE ONE TEXTURE MULTIPLE TIMES

While texture matching is key, it's also possible to use a texture at least three times in different areas of the house, advises Adams. Helps maintain a cohesive appearance.

DO: CONSIDER NEGATIVE SPACES

When it comes to eclectic decorating style, know that your eye needs a place to rest. “Keep shelves and tabletops empty, and consider molding a variety of artwork for an interesting shape of the wall behind,” says Adams. "It's not just about what you show. Sometimes it's about what you leave out."

DON'T: DISPLAY YOUR ENTIRE COLLECTION

You don't need to view your entire collection at once. To maintain an environment full of character, Adams prefers to mix things up. “Edit only your few favorites and rotate pieces for variety or seasonality,” she says.

DO: CONSIDER LAYOUT

When planning an eclectic style space, it's easy to get carried away with the colors, textures and patterns that will bring the look together. However, don't forget the placement. "I think design is one of the most important things in a room, more than color or fabrics," Konig says. "The design of the furniture is what will make it comfortable and feel like a room you want to be in." Before you start shopping for bedroom decor, Interior designers in gurgaon figure out where each piece of furniture will go. You might find that you don't really have room for that quirky floor lamp or that 19th century trunk.

DON'T: FORGET A FOCAL POINT

When organizing your design, remember: While eclectic styling involves combining styles and time periods across a wide variety of elements, the curated look shouldn't be without purpose. Joybird suggests creating a focal point (or accentuating an existing one) with an eye-catching feature, such as an accent wall, fireplace, or bold decorative piece.

DO: CONSIDER UTILITY

When determining what décor to incorporate into your eclectic design, remember that the room is meant to be lived in. “Let the utility inform your decorations,” says Konig. "It's pretty daunting to be faced with an empty room and have to think about what colors and fabrics you're going to use to decorate it, but utilitarian is a great decorator. Think about how you use a room to collect it." Consider baskets, shelves, drink trays and game tables. These elements bring a cozy and lived-in atmosphere to your room.

DON'T: BE INCONSISTENT

The nature of the eclectic style is varied, but every room in your home should always complement the others. "Bring eclecticism into your home to create fluidity," suggests Joybird. "Your space will look disjointed if the style suddenly changes from room to room." If you decide your home is ready for an eclectic update, make it a commitment that's reflected in every room in the house.

DO: PICK ONE GO-TO COLOR

One color should serve as a unifying factor throughout your design. “Let the color serve as a great equalizer, bringing the overall look together,” suggests Joybird. Whether your color of choice is olive green or off-white, keep coming back to it when decorating for a cohesive look.

DON'T: COMPARE HUES

When choosing your favorite color, don't be tempted to try paints on the wall, deciding from a range of colors. “The colors will do weird things and it will get very confusing,” says Konig. "Paint the colors you like on the boards, then look at them in isolation." Painted boards are also useful as a reference when shopping for decor or fabrics.

DO: PRACTICE BALANCE

Make it your goal to find balance in scale and symmetry. “Similar lines create harmony in design, even if the pieces are of different styles, textures, or time periods,” says Joybird. Don't sacrifice organization for diversity.

DON'T: MISTAKE ECLECTIC FOR "ANYTHING GOES"

Designing eclectic rooms doesn't mean throwing away all the rules. "There's a fine line between layers and updos for being busy and distracting," says Joybird. "Put a limit on the number of contrasting styles in a room to keep things from looking random."

DO: GIVE NEW STYLES A CHANCE

When you try out a new eclectic style and you don't like the result, don't be tempted to change it up right away. “Wait until the room is complete and live with it for a while,” says Konig. Interior designers in gurgaon "Things that seem important when you first decorate a room [like a surprisingly bright paint color] fade into the background once the space fills with furniture and other objects."

DON'T: BE RESERVED

The eclectic style is characterized by a multitude of fabrics, patterns and art supplies. "Home accessories like rugs, paintings, artwork, and accent pillows are handy ways to bring a thoughtful shift to any room," says Joybird.
